Further explanation

What is happening underneath?

Assuming you know what someone else thinks.

You assume you know someone else's thoughts, usually without asking them. The mind becomes a psychic hotline with poor regulation.

01

What it sounds like

  • She did not text back, so she must be mad at me.
  • "She thinks I am needy because I asked a follow-up question." That is a lot of plot from one facial expression.
02

How to tell

  • You treat tone, delay, punctuation, or silence as direct access to someone else's mind.
03

Why people use it

  • Guessing can feel safer than risking direct clarification.
04

How to respond

  • Ask: "Did they say that, or did I infer it?"

Manipulation watch

How this gets used on people.

  • Politicians use mind-reading about opponents' "real motives" to make audiences feel they have discovered hidden evil without evidence.
